Lime Running
"Lime running" appearing as an insoluble white stain may
occasionally occur as a result of saturation of masonry.
Such staining may come
from mortar joints or from concrete and cast stone members which become
saturated, and derives from free lime from the mortar or concrete leaching out
under excessively wet conditions.
For example, rain water should be prevented
from running off newly placed concrete upper floors and flowing over the edge
and onto the brickwork.
When fresh, it may frequently be removed by scrubbing
with water using a stiff bristle brush, but if carbonated, acid treatment by
trained personnel is likely to be required.
BS 6270:Part 1:1982 (as amended) and BDA Building Note 2 give guidance on
the cleaning of clay brick masonry.
